Community Sports Briefs for September and October


Allegiance Bowl VIII to be Sept. 22
Perennial Collegiate Sprint Football League powerhouse Army will face Post University in the 2012 Adirondack Trust Allegiance Bowl Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Saratoga Springs High School football field. Pre-game activities begin at 12:45 P.M. with kick off at 1:00 P.M.
Tickets to the event are $5 in advance, $8 day of game at the gate (children under 5-years-old free) and are available at any Adirondack Trust Company bank branch, area Price Chopper supermarkets, Walton's Sport Shop, Perkins and Perkins Attorneys or online at www.allegiancebowl.com.
Banquet tickets are $25 (children 16 and under $20) and may be obtained by calling 588-6952.

Girls Basketball Tryouts
Saratoga Girls Travel Basketball will be holding tryouts on Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Saratoga Springs Maple Ave. Middle School.
Registration is from 12:05-12:25 p.m. Tryouts are 12:30-2 p.m.
We are looking for girls in grades 4-8.

Recreation Center racquetball courts reopening
The Saratoga Springs Recreation Center gymnasium and racquetball courts will reopen Friday Sept. 14 at 8 a.m. The Recreation Center is open for registrations and use of the game room. Saratoga Boys CDYBL basketball tryouts
 Saratoga’s Boys Youth Basketball Club will conduct tryouts for the upcoming Capital District travel season Saturday, Sept. 15 and Monday, Sept. 17 at the Saratoga Springs Recreation Center on Vanderbilt Avenue. The program is open to boys in grades 4-8 who reside in the Saratoga School District. On Saturday fourth, fifth and sixth graders will try out from 1-2:30 p.m. and Grades 7 and 8 are slated for 2:30-4 p.m. On Monday, those in Grades 7 and 8 will try out from 6-7 p.m., while those in Grades 4, 5 and 6 are scheduled for 7-8 p.m.
Interested players are encouraged to attend both sessions for their age group, and a non-refundable $10 tryout fee will be collected at the time of registration. The club’s goal is to provide superior teaching and skill development while offering the best competitive environment available.

Saratoga fall girls lacrosse
The Saratoga Springs Recreation Department is currently registering for fall girls Lacrosse. The program is for girls Grades 1-6, meets Saturdays and Mondays.
The costs is $50 for Saratoga residents and $75 for non-Saratoga residents. US Lacrosse Level One Certified coach Cherie Grey will coordinate the camp, which will emphasize building skills through drills.

Saratoga-Wilton Elks soccer shootout
The Saratoga-Wilton Elks club will host its soccer shootout Saturday Sept. 15 from 9 a.m.-noon for boys and girls ages 7-13 at Gavin Park in Wilton.
Participants will be split up by age. Awards will be given for first and second place with the winners of each age group advancing to a district competition.

T-Ball registrations this Saturday
Wilton Youth Baseball is holding registrations for its fall baseball program this weekend.
In-person registration for the organization’s Tee Ball division will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. at Art Johnson Field in Gavin Park. The Tee Ball division is open to 5- and 6-year-old children. It will feature 1-hour sessions each Saturday between Sept. 15 and Oct. 27. The cost is $45. Youth Soccer Training on Monday Nights at Gavin Park
First Touch Soccer USA, in partnership with the Saratoga Wilton Soccer Club, is offering training sessions focusing on individual soccer skill improvement.  The sessions are run by St. Rose men soccer coaches Matt Jones and Stephen Hogan and their staff of current and former collegiate and professional players from all over the world.  The sessions are open to all boys and girls from ages 6-14 from Saratoga, Wilton, and the surrounding areas.
The sessions are Monday nights from Sept.17-Oct. 22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Gavin Park. The program costs $72 for all six sessions or $15 for each individual session.

Saratoga Kinderskate program
The Saratoga Springs Recreation Department is currently taking registration for it's Kinderskate program. This program teaches the basics and beyond of ice skating to children as young as 3 years old. Classes are held Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and consist of a half hour instruction
and a half hour practice. Cost is $30 for Saratoga Springs residents and $60 for Non-City residents.

Junior NBA registration at Gavin Park
Gavin Park’s highly successful youth basketball league is gearing up for another great season of Jr. NBA.  This recreational program is open to boys and girls Grades 2-10. All skill levels, including beginners, are welcome, and everyone receives equal playing time.
Placement dates are scheduled for Oct. 1 through Oct. 4.
Registration for Wilton residents is going on now. The deadline to register is Sept. 28. The cost is $115 for Wilton residents, $155 for Saratoga Springs City Schools residents and $165 for all others, which includes a full uniform. Gavin Park is located at 10 Lewis Drive in the Town of Wilton.

Hannah’s Hope Fund 6th Annual Run for Life 5K
The 6th Annual Run for Life 5K to benefit Hannah’s Hope Fund will be Sunday, Sept. 16. This year’s race will be held in memory of Chris Gleason, a Clifton Park runner who passed away in November at the Philadelphia Marathon.
The 5K run and two-mile walk start at 10 a.m. The kid’s fun run follows at 11 a.m.

SAFE Soccer program
Sports Are For Everyone (SAFE), a not-for-profit organization that runs sports programs for kids with  special needs, launches a soccer program at The Clifton Park Commons (behind the Senior Center, in front of the amphitheater). Soccer will start Saturday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. and will be held each Saturday through Oct. 20.
Children 5 years and older with mental and/or physical challenges are encouraged to participate.
SAFE teaches the fundamentals of each sport at a level where all players will have success.
SAFE provides an environment that allows children with special needs to build self-esteem, confidence, and friendships through sports by providing opportunities to socialize, and exercise both their motor and life skills

Fourth annual Skeeter Cup junior golf tournament
The fourth annual Skeeter Cup Junior golf tournament is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16 with a shotgun start at 2:30 p.m. at McGregor Links Golf & Country Club in Saratoga Springs. It is open to golfers ages 14-18.
The tournament will be a nine-hole, two man scramble with closest to the pin, hole-in-one, and longest drive contests with impressive prizes for winners, including a free round of golf for two, with cart, at Saratoga National Golf Course.

Greenfield 13U travel baseball tryouts
The Greenfield Yellow Jackets, a highly competitive travel baseball team in Eastern NY Travel Baseball, are holding tryouts Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m.-noon at the field on Porter Corners Road. Fr. Bondi Memorial Golf Tournament
The Saratoga Central Catholic School will host its annual Fr. Bondi Memorial Golf Tournament Monday, Sept. 17 at the McGregor Links Country Club. The cost is $150 per player and includes lunch, refreshments, greens fees, golf cart, dinner, contests and prizes. There are two formats to choose from: a four player scramble or a two player scramble. Boys & Girls Club Fall basketball league
The Delaware Boys and Girls Club is hosting tryouts for a fall basketball league for boys in grades 6-9 Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.. The cost is $20 per person and the season will run from Sept. 18 to Oct. 23. Registration and a player draft will occur at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 as well. For more information, call 210-7173.

Connor LaFrance 5K, Sept. 23
The Fifth Annual Connor LaFrance Memorial 5K walk/run will be held Sunday, Sept. 23 at SPAC, (Orenda pavilion) at 11 a.m.
Pre-registration is from 8-10:30 a.m. Music will be provided by the Stray Dogs, and have a BBQ lunch following the 5K. Tickets for lunch can be purchased day of.
The 5K is held to raise money for local athletes who are competing nationally or internationally in their sport of choice.

Saratoga YMCA Over-50 basketball league
The Saratoga Regional YMCA kicks off the seventh year of its Over-50 Basketball League with tryouts for new players Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. League games will be played Wednesdays starting Oct. 10 and going through March 13. the cost is $125 for YMCA members and $175 for non-members. A captain’s meeting Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga YMCA and players, sponsors are needed. Registration begins Sept. 12 at the East Avenue Branch front desk. 15th Annual Saratoga Springs Lions Club Golf Tournament
The 15th Annual Saratoga Springs Lions Club Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, Oct. 5 at McGregor Links Country Club in Wilton. The four-person scramble event is open to the public and proceeds benefit the many programs and services provided to the community through the Saratoga Springs Lions Club.
The event costs $115 for a single player or $440 for a foursome with participants able to enjoy 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, dinner, an awards ceremony and prize giveaways as part of the event. Saratoga Wilton Soccer Club Fall Soccer Academy
The Saratoga Wilton Soccer Club has announced the creation of a new 8U and 10U Soccer Academy Program for the 2012-2013 season. The program is designed for soccer players who are looking for advanced skills training beyond what is provided by recreational soccer. Boys with a strong interest in improving their soccer skills and playing soccer at higher levels will gain the most from this program.
The Academy will feature weekly training sessions with the best coaches in the area.
Practices will be each Thursday night through Oct. 25. The cost is $90 and includes a SWSC shirt. Those interested in continuing this soccer program into the winter and spring will have an opportunity to do so by registering for those academies later in the 2012-2013 season.

Saratoga Stampede American Legion baseball tryouts
The Saratoga Stampede Legion baseball program will be holding tryouts for the 2013 season. The Stampede program will field a 19U Sr. Legion team and a 17U Jr. Legion team next summer. Players residing within the following school district boundaries are eligible to play legion baseball for the Stampede: Ballston Spa, Saratoga High, Saratoga Catholic, Schuylerville, Galway, Mechanicville and Stillwater.
There are multiple roster spots available on all levels. The tryout will be held from 11–2 p.m. Oct. 14, 7-9 p.m. Oct. 15 and 7-9 p.m. Oct. 16 at Eastside Recreation. To register, contact Eric Thompson at 222-3990 or George Coleman at 312-3442.
