Schuylerville High School track closed during construction

Student athletes and the public will temporarily lose access to the track area at Schuylerville Central School District this spring and sum¬mer while crews install artificial turf field on the football field that is surrounded by the track.

The track area will be closed Tuesday, April 27 through the middle of August, as a safety precaution while the turf installa¬tion is done, school officials said.

Team practices and games will be relocated to the fields at Fort Hardy, Schuyler Park and the turf field at Stillwater. Physical education classes will use other areas of the campus and the indoor gym¬nasiums for the remainder of the school year.

The turf field was approved by district voters in February. Details about the cost of turf and its advantages are available at www.schuylervilleschools.org/FieldTurf/FieldTurf.cfm.

For more information, call the district at 695-3255.

Pop Warner cheer squads looking for practice facility

The Saratoga Pop Warner cheer teams need a home to practice their craft.

I received a request from the organization's president, Matthew Riker, asking for help.

He wrote that the squads are looking for an available facility that is well-lit with open space, similar to a warehouse or a large storage garage or facility. They could probably utilize a conference or banquet room with high ceilings.

Obviously as a 501c3 organization they are hoping someone might be able to donate the space for practices or rent it at an agreeable, inexpensive, "for the kids" type of rate.

If anyone has any ideas, feel free to e-mail me at shudy@saratogian.com and I will be happy to pass it along.

Section II Football Hall of Fame created, looking for nominees

The Capital District Chapter of the National Football Foundation is going to start a Section II Football Hall of Fame this year.

In order to make sure the committee has a solid list to choose from, they would like your input on who you think should be in the Hall of Fame.

As we all know there have been and still are many great coaches, players and officials that have come through the Section the past 90 or so years and it would be interesting to see what names come up from various positions and schools.

As you also know, not everyone can make it the first year but a solid list of former players would be very beneficial.

The committee has set a policy that only players that have played before the 2000 season will be considered.

So, who do you think should go in and why?

The organization will be posting a nomination form soon on its web-site http://www.section2football.com

Final poll results "Battle of Route 50" are in

After an early push by Ballston Spa during the first two days of voting on our newspaper's web-site, Saratoga Springs battled back and took it to the house for the victory.

Now it wasn't a runaway, but the final numbers are as follows for our poll question
The final numbers do represent a little wider margin than the results published in Friday's Saratogian because I didn't close out voting until 11 p.m., but the project was put on the page at 5 p.m.

My managing editor did bring up a good point that the population of Saratoga Springs may have been a deciding factor in the voting, just by sheer numbers.

While the poll is totally unscientific, it was fun and I didn't have to delete too many votes, only a few overzealous fans voted more than five times, so I capped the vote at five per individual ip addresses.

We'll let the players decide it on the field 7 p.m. tonight at Colonie.

Thanks for voting.

Saratoga put on an impressive offensive push early this week to take over the lead in the voting against Ballston Spa for the "Battle of Route 50" in the Section II Class AA Super Bowl Friday evening.

The Scotties held an early lead during the weekend, but as the voters advanced to the internet poll, the Blue Streaks pulled ahead, 56.8 percent to 43.2 percent late Monday night.

Ballston Spa leads Saratoga in Battle of Route 50

With the voting heating up during the first day of non-contact competition between Ballston Spa High School and Saratoga Springs, the Scotties have just over a two touchdown lead over the Blue Streaks.

Ballston Spa, according to Saturday's votes, is a 57.5 percent favorite to win the Battle of Route 50 next Friday night in the Class AA Super Bowl with Saratoga Springs receiving 42.5 percent of the vote.

It is early in the voting process, so spread the word, contact your booster clubs, friends and families of both the Scotties and the Blue Streaks and have then cast their vote here.

The voting will close out Thursday night and we will publish the results in Friday's Saratogian.

The Battle of Route 50 is set. Pick the winner.

After Ballston Spa's 42-9 win over Guilderland and Saratoga's 32-0 rout of Schenectady, the Section II Class AA Super Bowl, The Battle of Route 50, is now officially set for 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at Colonie High School.

The Class AA contest is the only one slated for Friday night and should be a sell out as these two juggernauts will decide who will advance to the regionals and hopefully to the Syracuse Carrier Dome. Along the way our newspapers will have all the action leading up to this historic showdown between these two Saratoga County teams.

But first things first...who will win? We want you to Pick the winner of the Battle of Route 50.

The results will be posted on-line and in next Friday's edition of The Saratogian.

Good luck to both teams.
